How to use it

  1. 01Choose what the code holds (a link or text, a Wi-Fi network, an email, a phone call, a text message or a contact card) and fill in the fields. Or pick one under Try.
  2. 02The QR code updates as you type. Pick its colours if you like, and choose more error correction if the code may get scuffed or have a logo over it.
  3. 03Download it as SVG (sharp at any size, best for print) or PNG at the size you need.

Questions

Which error correction should I choose?

M, the default, suits most uses: up to 15% of the code can be damaged and it still scans. Choose Q or H (25% or 30%) for codes on packaging, outdoors or with a logo on top; they hold less text, so the code gets denser. L gives the smallest code for clean screens.

How much can a QR code hold?

Up to 2,953 bytes of text with error correction L, 2,331 with M, 1,663 with Q and 1,273 with H. Digits alone pack tighter: up to 7,089 with L. Letters outside English take 2 to 4 bytes each. Long text makes a dense code that’s harder to scan, so a short link usually works better.

How does the Wi-Fi code work?

It holds the network in the format phone cameras read, such as WIFI:T:WPA;S:Guest;P:secret;;, and offers to join the network. The password is written into the code, so share the image only with people who may join. It’s made in your browser and isn’t sent to our servers.

What happens when someone scans an email, phone, SMS or contact code?

The phone offers to act on it: an email code opens a new email with the address, subject and message filled in (a mailto: link); a phone code offers to call the number (tel:+15550100199); a text message code opens a new SMS to the number with your message (SMSTO:+15550100199:Hi); a contact card (vCard 3.0) offers to save the name, phone, email, organisation and website as a contact. Nothing is sent until the person who scans it chooses to.

Can I change the colours?

Yes. Pick the code colour and the background; the preview and both downloads use them. Scanners need contrast, so the tool warns below a contrast ratio of 4.5:1, and when the code is lighter than its background, which some scanners can’t read. Black on white, the default, scans most reliably.

Do these codes expire or track scans?

No. The text is in the code itself, not behind a redirect of ours, so it works for as long as the link or text does, and we don’t see who scans it.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The code is made in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our servers, put into the page address or saved.
